POSITION: THERAPIST - TRAINEE/INTERN
Haight Ashbury Psychological Services (HAPS) is a low fee psychotherapy clinic which serves primarily adults and couples. The staff includes volunteer intake workers, masters level trainees and interns, doctoral level practicum students and licensed clinicians (MFTs and Psychologists) who provide supervision. HAPS offers a range of services and training experiences including individual, couple, and group psychotherapy, both brief and long term, for a variety of presenting problems.
DUTIES: Interns serve as primary therapists in a sixteen hour a week traineeship/internship/practicum for masters, postmasters, and doctoral students.
Students typically have eight to ten client contact hours and are required to do a four hour intake shift while they build up their caseload. Half the client contact hours must be done during evening hours or on Saturday and can be flexibly scheduled according to the intern's availability. Non flexible hours include Mondays from 9am to 3pm for mandatory staff meetings, group supervision and didactic training. In addition there is one hour of individual supervision, and administrative work. All interns are required to maintain a treatment plan for each client. The position is for twelve months. Generally there are one or more openings per month beginning in April and continuing through Sept. Occasionally there are also opportunities to start in the winter.
TRAINING: The clinical focus at HAPS is generally a problem solving one. Clients whose problems fit a short term model are seen on that basis, others require a longer term approach. The theoretical orientation is integrative, with emphasis on cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic and systems perspectives. Each intern has one hour of individual supervision per week with a licensed supervisor. Case conferences and didactic trainings occur on a weekly basis. Didactic trainings cover such topics as depression, anxiety, personality disorders, trauma and abuse, couples therapy, gay and lesbian issues, and eating disorders. Trainings are provided mainly by guest speakers, as well as HAPS staff.
REQUIREMENTS: Applicants are expected to be enrolled in a masters or doctoral level graduate program in clinical or counseling psychology. Common sense, ability to function independently as well as awareness of when to ask for assistance, flexibility regarding theoretical perspectives and a desire or community are essential.
APPLICATION: Interested applicants should forward a cover letter (which MUST include the interns availability regarding a start date), a current resume, and three letters of recommendation (from clinical supervisors if the intern has previous clinical experience),to: Lisa Frankfort, Ph.D., LMFT, Haight Ashbury Psychological Services, 2166 Hayes Street, Suite 308, San Francisco, CA, 94117.
Deadline for doctoral applications is February 15. There is no deadline for masters applications although typically they should arrive by mid April. Dr. Frankfort may consider applications after the deadline if there are still openings. Interviews continue until all openings are filled. Please note that August and September slots are highly competitive and students may have a better chance by being available for a Spring or early Summer opening
