HAPS Interns

POSITION: THERAPIST – TRAINEE/INTERN

Haight Ashbury Psychological Services (HAPS) is a sliding scale outpatient psychotherapy clinic serving individual adults and couples. The therapeutic approach for each client is often theoretically integrative and the treatment plan is developed in consideration of the unique needs and the background of each individual. Clients may be seen for brief or long-term psychotherapy.

POSITIONS: HAPS has openings for masters level traineeships, post-masters internships and doctoral practicums. We do not have either pre or post-doctoral internships. Unlike many training programs, HAPS has several openings each month from April, throughout the summer and into September. All positions are sixteen hours per week for a twelve-month contract. Unfortunately we do not offer paid positions.

DUTIES: Students typically have eight to ten client contact hours and are required to do a four-hour intake shift while they build up their caseload. Half the client contact hours must be done during evening hours, or on Saturday and can be flexibly scheduled according to the intern’s availability. Non-flexible hours include Mondays from 9am to 3pm for mandatory staff meetings, case conference and training. Students and supervisors arrange for individual supervision.

TRAINING: One hour of individual supervision and two hours of case conference is offered per week with licensed supervisors. Weekly trainings provided by the HAPS clinical director, supervisors and other experts in the field cover such topics as mindfulness and depression, anxiety, case formulations from both CBT and psychodynamic perspectives, group therapy, schema focused therapy, personality disorders, DBT, couples therapy, GLBT clients, and eating disorders. Other training topics include professional development and stress, burnout and self care for the pre-licensed therapist.

REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have some related counseling experience such as working on a crisis line or conducting intakes. Common sense, ability to function independently as well as awareness of when to ask for assistance, flexibility regarding theoretical perspectives and a desire for community are essential.

APPLICATION: Interested applicants should forward a cover letter – which MUST include the student’s availability regarding a start date month(s), a current resume, and three letters of recommendation (from clinical supervisors if the intern has previous clinical experience), to the address listed below. Only hard copies of application materials are accepted – no emailed attachments.

Doctoral applicants:
Deadline is February 17, 2017. HAPS adheres to all BAPIC regulations and deadlines.

Masters and post-masters applicants:
There is no firm deadline for masters/post masters applications, although February and March are typical submission times. Interviews continue until all openings are filled. As August and September slots are highly competitive, masters/post masters applicants may have a better chance by being available for a Spring or early Summer opening.
